Microsoft’s Free Defender VPN Scrapped

Futuristic lock shield protection

A virtual private network (VPN) provides added security for anyone using a public network, such as the Internet. By employing various security methods, such as encryption, the VPN can protect any data transmitted across the network, which may be at risk if it solely relies on the underlying public network infrastructure.

Now, Microsoft’s free VPN is being discontinued just two years after its introduction as part of the Defender security app. Originally included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions, the tool was designed to offer users a basic level of online privacy and security. However, Microsoft has decided to scrap the feature due to low usage. Reports suggest that this was largely because consumers were unaware of its existence and because of its limited capabilities compared to other standalone VPN services.

The service was never intended to be a full-fledged, feature-rich VPN service like those offered by specialised providers. Instead, it functioned as a lightweight security enhancement, focusing on encrypting data for safer browsing. However, its lack of customisation options, speed limitations, and restrictions on usage may have contributed to its lack of adoption among users who sought more comprehensive VPN solutions.

For those who have used the VPN on Windows, iOS, or macOS, no action is required. However, Android users must remove the tool from their VPN settings if they no longer wish to have it listed as an option. Keeping it in place won’t affect your device in any way.

While VPNs are not foolproof solutions for online security, they do provide an extra layer of protection against cyber threats, including harmful links and phishing attacks. With Microsoft Defender’s VPN being discontinued, users are encouraged to explore alternative VPN providers to ensure continued security and privacy while browsing the web.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, maintaining secure online practices remains essential. Users should consider implementing a combination of security measures, such as enabling multi-factor authentication, keeping software up to date, and using reputable cybersecurity tools to protect their data in an increasingly digital world.
