Don’t Put Your IT All In One Cloud!

As the saying goes, “Don’t put your eggs all in one basket”, the same could be said for cloud storage solutions and data backup.

Cloud computing has become a standard feature in many organisations.  It gives greater flexibility and allows you to scale resources and storage. While there is a cost involved, it’s far less than paying for a physical infrastructure.

The likes of Google and Apple have also made it easy for much of our personal digital lives to exist within the cloud.  They’ve made it quick and straightforward to upload our important files to cloud storage from the moment we set up our devices.  And when it comes to changing to the latest iPhone or laptop, it’s a seamless process to access files just by signing into your account.

However, as a recent news story from Google suggests, having everything stored in the cloud could be detrimental.

When Google Cloud accidentally deleted an Australian pension provider’s $135 billion private cloud account and backups, it crippled the services for nearly two weeks for more than 600,000 members.  It demonstrates why we shouldn’t solely rely on a single cloud provider.  Fortunately for the company, a complete disaster was averted as they had backups with another provider, so they could restore the data and resume business, but not before a lot of stress and anguish for those impacted.

Utilising multiple cloud providers minimises unplanned downtime or outages by reducing the risk of a single point of failure.  An outage in one cloud won't necessarily affect services in other clouds.  If one cloud goes down, your computing needs can be seamlessly redirected to another fully operational cloud.
